In order to survive over 100 years, an organism or an organization, must evolve. Where was the world 100 years ago? The bubonic plague, which affected 75 million lives, hit the west coast of the United States; the N.A.C.C.P. was founded; the Hudson Car Company modeled its first line of cars; construction workers began to pour concrete into the Panama Canal; and the autobiography of Clifford W. Beers, “A Mind That Found Itself”, hits shelves. This autobiography chronicled Clifford W Beers’ struggle with mental illness. Beers was the first to acknowledge and publicly admit a mental illness in paperback. This revolutionary act, inspired individuals to create a national citizen’s group to promote mental health conditions, and attracted the attention of the Rockefeller family and philosopher William James. This excitement, prompted a group of dedicated individuals to establish an organization, known as; Mental Health America; a non profit, centered around promoting, treating, and advancing the treatment of mental health.

With emergence of concern surrounding post traumatic stress disorder, Mental Health America evolved with their recent partnership with, Operation Healthy Reunions. This relationship of organizations is dedicated to provide treatment and aid to United States veterans and their families. MHA and OHR are also establishing educational programs on PTSD, in order to eliminate the stigma of mental health; along with outreach programs to aid support veterean’s families.

Although MHA and OHR, are doing their part; they implore us to do ours. As United States citizens, we receive the direct advantages of freedom, that the United States military provides for us. In order to show your support and graciousness, individuals can donate to the Mental Health America program, at: http://www.mentalhealthamerica.net/reunions/help.cfm.

The Mayo Medical Clinic is an organization, which allows professionals to integrate a vast amount of resources, in order to train, equip, and support medical research. Within the medical clinic, the organization is separated into four different branches; education resources, research resources, community engagement, and the service center. Each one these branches, performs regular studies, which aids to service the public. Below is a general layout of each branch and their functions.

1. Education Resources: This division of the medical clinic conducts research, with the goal of producing the medicines and treatments of tomorrow. The educational resource division’s main objection is to train and mentor students of science and medicine, in order to produce future Mayo clinic employees. The medical clinic offers education and research experience at all levels, such as, certificate, diploma, Master’s, and doctorate. As an individual establishes seniority, he/she is encouraged to motivate, educate, and mentor in coming students. This educational recycling is a method which entrenches a solid understanding of the research and the studies.

2. Research Resources: The research resources division of the medical clinic is comprised of fourteen core specialty laboratories. Each lab represents, every imaginable research discipline. The medical clinic also provides local hospitals with several of their faculty, ranging from pharmaceutical, to nurses. Since, the medical clinic is funded by the National Institutes of Health, the medical clinic is one of the premier sites for conducting inpatient and outpatient studies.

3. Community Engagement: Along with providing the medical field with their studies, the medical clinic also provides immediate aid the community. The medical clinic has established a network in 66 Midwest communities to promote their clinical research. This method allows the community to directly understand and gain excess, to the research conducted by the clinic. The Mayo clinic also created an Office for Diversity in Clinical Research to represent the less fortunate communities. This method has interloped the community with the knowledge to conquer several different health disparities.

4. Service Center: This branch of the medical clinic is a direct streamline of the research conducted in the other divisions. While most medical clinics service their patients through complex administrative requirements, the Mayo medical clinic service center strictly focuses on patient to professional interaction. This practice allows the patient to gain a better knowledge of his/her current situation, while establishing a more comfortable experience. Along with regular visits, the service center also offers consultative services for study design, bio-statistics, research ethics, participant recruitment, as well as providing regulatory expertise, and administrative liaisons.
